Turmeric added to warm milk to make a turmeric tea, makes a comforting drink for a cold day. I make mine with coconut milk.
I had heard about a version of this drink some years ago, but dismissed it with a pinch of salt believing a bright yellow curry drink would quite frankly be a little (nay, a lot) rank. With the right added ingredients, however, it can taste good.
In order to make the drink even tastier I added fresh ginger, a little cardamom and then vanilla extract and stevia to sweeten. Not only does this taste great, it is warming and comforting.

Author: Ceri Jones
Recipe type: Drink
Serves: 2
Ingredients
- 1 Tbs freshly grated ginger
- 2 tsp turmeric
- ½ tsp ground cardamom
- 165mls full fat coconut milk (I like the mini cans by Thai Kitchen, or use ½ a regular can)
- 330 mls water (2 empty coconut can's worth)
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- ½ tsp stevia liquid
Instructions
- Squeeze the juice from the grated ginger into a saucepan along with the flesh.
- Add the turmeric, cardamom, coconut milk & water and bring to just shy of a boil. Remove from the heat, add the vanilla and stevia and strain to serve.
Notes
A larger batch can be made up, and stored in the fridge in an airtight glass container for a couple of days if preferred. If scaling up the recipe by more than 2, reduce the spices or it will be too strong.
Hi Ceri. As a cancer nutritionist and health educator I’m hot on anything turmeric, and can confirm its tremendously powerful anti-inflammatory credentials, as well as it being supportive for respiratory health. My own version of turmeric tea is consistently one of my top posts, so I am predicting your Paleo version will be very popular, and helpful to many of your readers. I whack turmeric in any old likely thing at this time of year, but turmeric tea is delicious in its own right. Lovely version, Ceri. Enjoy the remaining weeks of your American adventure!
Hi Kelly, – so glad you’re with me on this one. I’ll be sure to check out your version and give it a go too! Isn’t it just the best spice?? I love how we have the power to heal ourselves through food. Its what’s driving me hugely right now! Thanks for stopping by! x
Hi Ceri. I’ll join the choir and sing the praises of Turmeric anytime!
I an relate a few stories.Years ago, I had a humonguous plantar wart on my foot.. I could not touch my foot to the floor, it was so excruciatingly painful, and so had mised several days of work. The podiatrist tried to get it out and couldnt get near it ,as it was so swollen and inflamed, so told me to put some medication and these plaster things on it and wait for a week. Forget that, I needed to get back to work.so I hopped down to the health store and looked up in Balch’s book what was useful for plantar warts.I decided to try Turmeric ,as I knew it was safe.I bought some .Only 24 hours later , I could walk on it, and the pain was about 70 % gone. When the doc saw my foot 6 days later, he said he couldnt even find the root of the wart, it had so completely disppeared, Wow!Even better , it never came back.
Also. years after, I got Lyme disease, and my worst problem as a result was a kind of meningitis that turned into burning, shooting pains all over my body, as in “Go straight to Hell do not pass Go…” So I started taking Turmeric as a tea before bedtime.
I would heat turmeric and soymilk and put in a teeny bit of stevia, and it almost always helped greatly with the pain. I had taken turmeric for several years semi regularly, and so I believe it was the reason I had a benign instead of a malignant bone tumour.
Thanks for the tea recipes .’ll try them and pass them on.
Hi Paulette, I’m so sorry to hear of your trials and tribulations over the years – but what a joy to discover that Turmeric has played a part in helping your recovery. Thank you for your thoughts and comments – and look forward to hearing that you’ve enjoyed my version of the tea, Best, Ceri
I need a new knee, and was having injections in my knee joint. I was put in touch with the Turmeric Users Group(100,000) members.Istarted taking golden paste on the Friday by the following Thursday I could go up and down the stairs one foot in front of the other, instead of up with the good and down with the bad,I just can’t belive how taking 1tsp of paste 4 times a day could make me compleatly pain free
Amazing right?
Hi Ceri
I suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and I read that turmeric is an anti-inflammatory. I would love to try out your recipe but cannot use coconut milk for heath reason. can I use almond milk as a substitute?
Hi Calen, So sorry to hear about your arthritus. Turmeric is indeed an anti-inflammatory, you can of course use almond milk, but be sure to add some extra fat to the drink in some form or other as the turmeric is best absorbed with some fat (and also black pepper helps too I have recently learned). If unsure please consult a medical specialist! Good luck
